Secrets - What's There to Hide?

There is something VERY important going down in our country people and I don't think many of you realise the seriousness of it. Some of you might recognise the term Protection of Information Act, some of you may just know it as The Secrecy Bill. But I don't think many of you know the true depth to which this will effect our country if it is passed as planned on the 23rd of June.

But for us 'normal' folk who probably won't understand any of that Political pish posh, I'll sum up a few vital points.

• This Bill is giving the government the power to classify ANY information they find that might fall under National interest and that might cause a stir in the nation. This means that if they feel that some information will cause an upset, they have the power to withhold that information, no questions asked.
• This spans over ALL government organs, including schools, hospitals, the police, news, the SABC and most importantly the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) who hold all the power around elections and votes.
• What does this mean to us? Well this basically means that the government can hide any sort of corruption within those fields and journalists have no way of proving it.
• For example: If they wanted to rig the votes, they could and no one would have access to the proof of them doing so.
• This means that a lot more shit can go down and the government can easily just cover their tracks.
• Currently all files and information are deemed available to the public and especially to journalists who are trying their best to inform you, the nation, on what is going on under our noses. This may become impossible once this Bill is passed.
• For anyone who goes against the system, may find themselves in jail for up to 25 years with a minimum of 15 years, which is the same sentence as a rape and even for murder (a bit harsh don't you think?)
• For me, it's the simple question of, What are you trying to hide?

Anyway, I just want you to know what is happening right under our feet and I know that if not all, most of you will be opposed to this. So let's not take this lying down? COSATU, DA, IFP and other opposing political parties are also against this bill being passed. So let's all join as one big nation and stand up for what we deserve and against government corruption!
